Disciples share Jesus’ call to to
live sacrificially with money

Jesus warned His followers that we cannot serve both God and money (Matthew 6:24). He did not say “you should not” but rather “you cannot” serve both. One (money or God) will of consequence displace the other in terms of informing direction to your life. One will be sacrificed to the other. Again, the point is not that Jesus’ followers should sacrifice; the point is that they will sacrifice one for the other. Which one have you sacrificed for the sake of the other?

Following Jesus as We Come 'n Go

Matthew 19:21

If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.

Pondering Point

In certain theological circles, one might say that you have to “come to Jesus” before you can “go for Jesus.” But Jesus' comment in this instance contrasts that idea. The man comes to Jesus seeking validation that he is indeed part of God's kingdom. In being told to “go,” it is not simply to go away, but to go rid himself of what stands between him and being saved: his riches. It is not unusual for us Christians to perceive that we are following faithfully only to discover that sin has displaced God on the throne of our hearts. If you journey with us this week in IMMERSION, you will get opportunity to consider if and how God has been dethroned in your life. At this moment, let’s pray that God has His rightful place in our hearts, our lives, and our lifestyles.

Prayer for the Day

Father God, You deserve to be on the throne of my heart. Show me if and where I need to ‘go’ and rid my life of other "gods" so I may come back to you as my sole provider – my sole God. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
