Disciples follow Jesus’ call to go out into the world as a “sent one” in His name

Following Jesus as We Come 'n Go

Luke 10:3

Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.

Pondering Point

These are not words shared directly toward us today, but they are reflective of environments Jesus sends disciples into. And it is true that Jesus is still sending His disciples out into the world. Can you hear the hymn lyric (LSB 740),  "I am Jesus’ little lamb, ever glad at heart I am; for my Shepherd gladly guides me, knows my needs and well provides me…" as He sends us out like “lambs among wolves.”

Lambs didn’t fight wolves, but needed – and relied upon – a shepherd to protect them, like in Psalm 23. Let’s not shy away from the call to go out, but like the man of God Isaiah (of whom we’ll read later this week), let’s tell God, “Here am I. Send me!” Here is the first verse of that previously quoted hymn with the last line altered for the devotion:

I am Jesus’ little lamb, ever glad at heart I am
For my Shepherd gladly guides me,
Knows my needs and well provides me
As He sends me midst the wolves,
I will trust His words of love

Prayer for the Day

Lord Jesus, remind me to be glad at heart to be Your lamb. I look forward to You guiding and protecting me as I go out like a lamb among wolves. Amen.
