Wellspring of Joy
Deuteronomy 7:6
For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.
Pondering Point
It is not uncommon for us to think about money as a treasure. It may be less common to think of people as treasures. Clearly this passage from Deuteronomy gives God's perspective on the Jewish people, whom he clearly treasures. And when you add the Jesus-dying-for-the-world dynamic to the mix, you find that He is willing to give up nearly everything for the treasure of people (He gives up His glory, comforts of heaven, even life itself albeit temporarily).
So, while we can sing to God lyrics like "You're my treasure, You're my hope," we can also choose to imagine God singing the same lyric about over us (see Zephaniah 3:17).
Zephaniah 3:17
The Lord your God is with you,
the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;
in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
but will rejoice over you with singing.”
In fact, some teach that the parables of the hidden treasure and pearl of great price (Matthew 13:44-46) are indicative of Jesus coming and sacrificing all for our sake, for His treasured possession.
Matthew 13:44-46
The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
Prayer
Father God, Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, thank You for treasuring me – for treasuring all of us. I treasure this truth, this reality, this foundational principle of life with You. I pray that I honor You in my life by treasuring You above all things and serving You with all earthly treasures. Amen.
