Scripture's Story for the Week

Jesus Appears to Thomas

Placeholder Picture

John 20:19-30

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

Pondering Point

When this story takes place, Jesus has yet to commission his disciples to go and make disciples of the nations (Matthew 28:19). But the witnessing had already begun. The women witnessed about the resurrection to the original "Twelve" at the request of Jesus (they are of course no longer twelve since Judas sadly hanged himself). Today's story continues the resurrection witnessing, this time from “The Twelve.” Who are they witnessing to? One of their own. Thomas happened to be absent when Jesus appeared behind locked doors the night of his resurrection. The Twelve find themselves struggling to convince Thomas of the legitimacy of this resurrection. It would be the presence and testimony of Jesus that finally wins Thomas over. May His presence in us do the same.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, may Your Holy Spirit help me with my testimony as I go with You and make disciples. May Your presence in me and my testimony of You be winsome to those I encounter. Amen.
