Eat with One Another

1 Corinthians 11:33

So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together.

Pondering Point

This encouragement to “eat with one another” is not about simply taking in food together. It is specifically a reference to participating in the Lord’s Supper. Both types of eating together are good and encouraged as you will find in Acts 2:42 and 2:46. The Corinthian Christian community received communion in the midst of an Agape Feast. Think of it as having a standing “potluck” meal alongside the Communion experience.

Ponder these four questions with God now (and eventually a group of others):

  1. When was the last time I participated in Holy Communion?
  2. With whom did I commune?
  3. With whom else would I like to celebrate Holy Communion?
  4. What could I do personally to help make this happen?

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for reminding me that Your meal is not something merely between me and You, but between my brothers and sisters as well. Help my spirit, my mind, my heart, and my body to be at peace with You and them so that I may enjoy this holy meal in its intended capacity. Help me get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger and malice so that I might display a kindness and compassion that echoes Your kindness and compassion – like a fragrance going up to the Heavenly Father, bringing Him honor as I live in this world. I love You Jesus. Amen.
