Pondering Point

It is not unusual to read the Old Testament and find God calling His people to remember. They were told to remember the Sabbath (1), His commands (2), their Covenant (3), their deliverance from slavery (4) and their wilderness testings (5) to name a few.

Jesus Himself encouraged the disciples to remember certain lessons and learning experiences, including this one: a servant is not greater than his master -- expect persecution (see John 15:20).

God knows how important it is to remember who we are – and whose we are – when facing troubling situations such as being sent out "like lambs among wolves."

Do you know how important this is?

(1) Exodus 20:8

8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

(2) Numbers 15:30-31

30 “‘But anyone who sins defiantly, whether native-born or foreigner, blasphemes the Lord and must be cut off from the people of Israel. 31 Because they have despised the Lord’s word and broken his commands, they must surely be cut off; their guilt remains on them.’”

(3) Deuteronomy 4:10

10 Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, when he said to me, “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children.”

(4) Deuteronomy 7:18

18 But do not be afraid of them; remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.

(5) Deuteronomy 8:2

2 Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

John 15:20

20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.

Prayer for the Day

Lord Jesus, as You send me out like a lamb among wolves, shepherd me. I am Yours. Give me confidence that You have my back, that You will lead me through the valley(s) of shadow and death. I so appreciate the life that You have given me, and that Your goodness and mercy follow me all the days of my life. You are a great Shepherd. Amen.
