Discipleship Point and Prayer

FRIDAY'S BIT OF
DISCIPLESHIP

Placeholder Picture

When I am tempted with pride, bitterness and envy, I need to understand that when it is time for me to receive something, God will make it happen. On the other hand, I need to see that if someone else is receiving an opportunity, it is because God decided it was time. In either case, bitterness and envy grow from pride that believes we know better than God knows or doubts that God is really in control. Too many talented and useful disciples are stewing because they feel overlooked and the Kingdom of God is losing out.

MISSIO DEI

Discipleship Point

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE GREAT SENDING IN JOHN 17:18?

(248-249 of The Great Sending book)

Today’s Missio Dei Discipleship Point is one to ponder both on your own and together with others. In light of John 17:18, answer the following questions:

John 17:18

As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.

  • What is the significance of “As” [καθώς (kathōs)]?
  • Who and what is the significance of the “you” [“Father”]?
  • Who and what the significance of the “me” and “I also”?
  • What is the significance of “send,” and “sent” (ἀποστέλλω or apŏstĕllō; πέμπω or pĕmpō)?
  • Who and what the significance of the “them” [“you”] and the meaning and application?
  • What is the significance of the “world” (κόσμος, cosmos), the why, the what, the who, and the how?

Discipleship Prayer

Lord Jesus, open my heart, mind, soul and spirit to the Great Sending that occurred first in Your coming and now in our going into this world in Your name and authority. As You brought glory to God the Father, may we do so as well. In Your name Jesus I pray. Amen.

Jesus Announces the Good News

The
Great Sending
Word of the Day
Mark 1:14-20

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Jesus Calls His First Disciples
16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
