His disciples came to him, and Jesus began to teach them.

We are stepping into 2018 with a review of the basics in the discipleship covenant, including the opportunity to renew that covenant in your personal time with the Lord this week.

Spend time meditating on these verses and accompanying thoughts used during the week. Pray over each day’s facet and own it for yourself.

My Faith Walk

Apostle Paul testified “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved”. (Romans 10:9)

This is where our path of discipleship starts — confession of faith in Jesus. Is this your confession?

My Covenant

 I confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and I believe God raised Him from the dead.

Our goal is for people to agree on and live out the vision of disciples making disciples and our mutual calling to make disciples of our Lord Jesus.

Jesus’ goal for his original disciples (Matt 28:16) was to make more disciples (Matt 28:19); I believe that I am one of those disciples.

I believe that I am a called by Jesus to be a disciple.

Having been baptized and being taught to obey all that Jesus commanded, I am called to carry on His mission to make disciples of others (also known as “fishing for men” or “saving what was lost” (Matt. 28:19, 4:19, Luke 19:10, 15:1-32).

This was God’s plan from the beginning, that as God’s workmanship in Jesus (Eph. 2:10), I would share the good news of Jesus wherever I go in life.

In my desire to be someone “always ready to share the reason for the hope that I have in Christ Jesus” (1 Peter 3:15) I am willing to set goals to be intentional about my life of following Jesus (i.e. discipleship).

In short, these goals revolve around being in God’s Word regularly and being in loving relationships with God and people with an eye toward discipleship (particularly discipleship-oriented groups).

As a disciple of Jesus, I should anticipate growth. I can also anticipate set-backs and disappointments, meaning I will need grace and forgiveness along the way from God, myself, and others.

I envision the Holy Spirit making this happen in me, and so under His leadership, I commit to grow as a disciple in Christ using self-discipline and loving (agreed upon) accountability from others. See Proverbs 27:17

I acknowledge that this covenant (discipleship partnership) is not so much with a church, its pastor or even this website, but primarily with Jesus and his rightful calling on my life.

I fully understand that although this may not be taught or expected at every church, it is biblical and in accord with the will of Jesus for ME as HIS DISCIPLE (Mark 8:34).

Having counted the cost of discipleship, I want to follow Jesus and join him on his mission of making disciples.

Today's Prayer

Lord God, In view of your mercy, I offer my body as a living sacrifice, an act of worship — may it be holy and pleasing. Transform me by renewing my mind that I will be able to test and approve what Your good, pleasing, and perfect will is. adapted, Romans 12:1-2
